We finally got inside the prototype room. I think this was the hardest part, we had to come out of our comfort zone and really talk to people about our project so they knew exactly what we needed from the laser cutter. The process was long, however very easy to do and easy to remember, so that was nice!
When using the laser cutter you have to make sure that you have in red lines whatever is that you want to cut. If there is extra, unconnected or accidentally connected red lined it will cut them! For example, the image below, we didn't connect the dog's leg to the body and it cut it wrong. On the image above is what I mean by you have to be careful what you select within the red lines.
Experimenting with paint.
Here we decided to experiment with black paint to see how the texture will turn out and how long it will take to dry. It took super long and what made the process even longer is that we had to then turn it around and paint it again. We would not be considering this for the installation. Also, it get's super messy and it leaves brush strokes, which we don't want.
Experimenting with different spray paints.
We loved the idea of spray paint. It didn't take that long and it dried super fast, it took half of the process of what the paint did, so this is definitely idea. Another good factor is that it sinks into the wood so it doesn't necessarily leave any texture just makes the wood texture blunt. The only problem is that we have to be careful using the space within the prototype room, as other people want to use it, but after 5 is very quite there so it that would be the best time.
Overall, this was very exciting and definitely made me come out of my comfort zone. We got to know some other students from other courses as we needed help and we had to communicate. It was nice to see why they needed the prototype room for. I feel more confident now going in there, it really cool to see how many things you can make in there and from all kinds of materials.
