Experimenting with materials - round 1

Updated: Nov 11, 2019

I feel very motivated for this project. I think me and Esther can create something very cool and interesting. We are definitely putting ourselves out of our comfort zones. We went out and bought some materials that we think it would be good to experiment with.

As we have officially decided to create a perceptual art we definitely need to make sure we experiment with materials even though we already know we can do it with pretty much anything and everything because of the research I have done with Michael Murphy.

Experiment 1 - cotton and wire

We had this idea of representing how soft, relaxing and smoothing the artists music is, so we began to think about how we can represent these things. We though of; clouds, water, pastel colours, whites, cotton, puffiness and fluffiness. I asked Esther how she feels comfortable and at ease and she said straight away her bed, so we though about the clean and fresh smell of bed sheets, the crunchiness of them and the warmth.

We went out and got some cotton and wire from Hobby Craft (ps, Hobby Craft if you're reading this SPONSOR ME, thanks :))

The cotton is supposed to represent the softness of the music and the wire is supposed to represent how his life structured him and his past, because wire is had it will also allow us to keep the shape of the cotton.

The images below show that it did not work!

Experiment 2 - cotton and wire

With the second experiment first of all we forgot to take photos, so THAT'S NO GOOD. What we did was we wrapped the wire around the cotton heart. It didn't work because the heart shape wasn't clear it was a heart shape. We asked some people in class and some got it other didn't, we want everyone to get it! I also forgot to mention that we decided to use a heart as a shape because I think it will definitely be a symbol we will use for the perceptual art as it can represent love, his love to his nephew, family, etc.

Experiment 3 - wood

Once again this didn't work either. One we didn't think that we would have to cut the wood ourselves, so if we have to do this for about 100 other symbols and shapes it will take a long time and we have other things we need to focus on as well. Also, the wood was quite thick which made it hard to cut.

The next experiment for Thursday will be that we will get a thin wood which will be specific for the laser cutter we have at uni. We can create the needed shapes on a computer which will be amazing because we will spend less time cutting and drawing, but in fact get it to the persistence of what it needs to be. This will save us a lot of time, the wood will be lighter which means it would be easier to hang and we can spray paint it which will take less time then actually painting it and so on. I am quite excited for this experiment, I believe it will be a good one. We have asked our musician to send us photos which we will cut out and use specific things from such as; baby images, objects he is emotionally attracted to and that basically make him him. I'm excited for doing this because it will take me away from the laptop and I can get physical which I loved doing back in art classes. It will be awesome!
